Buddha's Teaching

by The Buddha

Know all things to be like this:
A mirage, a cloud castle, a dream, an apparition,
without essence - but with qualities that can be seen.

Know all things to be like this:
As the moon in a bright sky reflected in some clear lake
(though to that lake the moon has never moved).

Know all things to be like this:
As an echo that derives from music, sounds and weeping
(yet in that echo is no melody).

Know all things to be like this:
As a magician makes illusions of horses, oxen, carts and other things,
nothing is as it appears.

Just as if a man traveling through the forest should see an ancient path, traversed by men of former days;

and going along it he should see an ancient city having gardens, groves, and pools;

and that city came to be restored so that it became prosperous and flourishing;

even so have I seen an ancient path traversed by the enlightened ones of former times, this Noble Eightfold Path;

that is,

Right View,
Right Thought,
Right Speech,
Right Action,
Right Livelihood,
Right Effort,
Right Mindfulness,
and Right Concentration.

Along that ancient path I have gone, and going along it

I have come to fully comprehend ageing and death;

I have come to fully comprehend the arising of ageing and death;

I have come to fully comprehend the ceasing of ageing and death;

I have come to fully comprehend the way going to the ceasing of ageing and death:

Whatever arises, ceases

The Buddha, which means "the enlightened one" was born over 2,500 years ago, the son of a King in Northern India. He was prophesied to become either a great king or a great spiritual teacher, so his father kept him in the palace, away from every distressing sight. After travelling in the city several times, Gautama saw an old man, a corpse being taken to burial, and a monk. These sights led him to question his life, and he ran away from the palace and became a wandering ascetic for six years, finally attaining enlightenment seated at the foot of a bodhi tree.
