Whitsunday is one of four Term and Quarter Days in Scotland. Since 1886 the date of Whitsunday has been set at 28th May. Before then, the date was the seventh Sunday after Easter, and then fixed at 15th May in 1693. It originally coincided with the church celebration of Pentecost.
The other three term and quarter days are: Lammas (formerly 1st August, now 28th August), Martinmas (formerly 11th November, now 28th November) and Candlemas (formerly 2nd February, now 28th February).
