The Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels sometimes called the Feast of Michael and All the Angels, is a day in the Christian calendar, mainly celebrated in the Roman Catholic church on 29th September each year. In the church, the event is marked by special services. It is the origin of the English quarter day of Michaelmas and falls on the same day.
Originally, this date was reserved just for St Michael, but Gabriel (whose feast was on March 24) and Raphael (whose feast was on October 24) were added when the General Roman Calendar was reformed.
In different parts of the world, different customs prevail, mostly connected with food. For example, in Germany, Denmark, and Austria it is traditional to drink Michelsminne ("St Michael's Love"). In France they eat gaufres (waffles), in Italy gnocchi (small potato dumplings), in England roast goose and in Scotland St Michael's Bannock.
