The Seventh Night (Ch'i-hsi), or the "Weaving Maid and Herd Boy" Festival, is a romantic festival based on the tale of a couple who disobeyed the chief deity, and are as a consequence held in the sky as stars on either side of the Milky Way. On this night, magpies fly up from earth and join their wings to form a bridge over the Milky Way so that the lovers can meet.
The celebration, which takes place on the 7th Day of the 7th Month in the Chinese Lunar calendar, is a variant of the Qixi festival or Night of Sevens, which occurs each year on the same day.
