Independence Day is celebrated on 3rd July each year as a national holiday in Venezuela.
First colonised by Spain in the 15th century, Venezuela began a war of independence led by Francisco de Miranda and Simón Bolívar that lasted from 1810 to 1821. It was on 3rd July, 1811 that Venezuela declared its independence from Spain.
However, that is not the whole story, as full independence was not gained for some years, due to Spanish reluctance to lose any of its Empire, especially the extensive foothold that it had in the Caribbean and central and South America.
It was not until the Battle of Carabobo on 24th June 1821 that de-facto independence was gained, and 1823 before this was formalised and recognised.
Bolívar’s involvement in the anti-colonial uprisings in South America are legendary, and after independence Venezuela joined for a time with Colombia, Ecuador and Panana in Bolivar’s "Gran Colombia" federation, but the countries eventually decided to go their separate ways.
