The Easter Story

In Poland, Easter Monday is known as "Wet Easter Monday" or "Dyngus Day" (sometimes spelt "Dingus"). It's traditional for boys to chase after girls and to sprinkle them with water - even drenching them completely - and striking their legs with switches of birch, or pussy willow. Although it's becoming common for girls to simply retaliate in kind, traditionally they have the chance to get even the next day by throwing crockery at the boys.

This tradition is probably Pagan in origin. It remains common in Poland, Eastern Europe and across the US.


Easter Monday is the day after Easter Day, and in many countries is a public holiday. It is a Bank Holiday in England and Wales, but not Scotland. It was once the beginning of a whole week of celebrations after Easter, when the austerity of Winter was over and the new Spring-time crops were starting to become available.
