Jordan celebrates the Accession of King Abdullah on 9th June each year. The day commemorates the formal accession to the throne of Jordan of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein on 9th June 1999.
His father was King Hussein of Jordan and his mother was Antoinette ("Toni") Avril Gardiner, a British woman. His father named him Crown Prince on 24 January 1999 shortly before he died on 7th February the same year. King Abdullah II assumed his constitutional powers as Monarch of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan the day his father passed away.
