The Battle of the Little Bighorn was fought on 25 June 1876 at the same time when the plain wars were being fought by the American government and the Native Indians. Several Native Indian tribes were living on the western plains at that time.
The Battle of the Little Bighorn was led by General A. Custer. He was regarded as the toughest of the generals in the American regimen. However, as some people say success can get to one's head, General Custer severely underestimated the power of his opponent.
The biggest strength for the Native Indian armies was that they had a high population. They knew the area well and Custer underestimated these facts. Right from the word go there was a miscalculation of Native Indian's army strengths and a lot of misconceptions.
The main reason why Americans lost the Battle of the Little Bighorn was the misleading information they had about the Indian tribes.
What General Custer thought was that in spite of his army being small, they had superior weapons and they could easily outnumber the Native Indian troops as they lacked the weapons. However, the Indian troops decided to take several people down on a one to one basis. The strength of the American force very soon dwindled to a lesser figure.
Many people who knew about the war and the general's history also said that he was very impatient and decided to fight even when the opponent was clearly dominating and had a presence more than his. If General Custer had backed out of the war at that time to come back more prepared, he might have stood a better chance of achieving his purpose.
