Republic Day is celebrated in India on the 26th January each year.
The day commemorates two separate, but related events: firstly, the declaration in 1929 by the Indian National Congress of the intention to work toward independence from Great Britain and, secondly, the day in 1950 when India became a Republic (having been granted independence in 1947).
