Giỗ Tỗ Hùng Vựơng commemorates the legendary founding of the Vietnamese nation by Hùng Vựơng (King Hùng). The celebration takes place on the tenth day of the third month in the Vietnamese calendar.
According to legend, Hùng Vương was one of 100 sons born to the dragon lord, Lạc Long Quân and the mountain fairy, Âu Cơ, and became the first emperor of Văn Lang of the Lạc Việt (as Vietnam was known) in 2880 BCE. His empire covered the whole of Vietnam and part of modern China. He founded the Hông Bàng dynasty, which ruled Vietnam until 258 BCE.
