St Scholastica's Day

St Scholastica is a Roman Catholic saint born in Italy (circa 480 CE) and the twin sister of St Benedict of Nursia. It is said that she regularly met, debated and worshipped with her brother.

According to St Gregory the Great, she was a nun and the leader of a community of women some 8km from the Abbey of St Benedict near Monte Cassino. It is assumed that the community followed Benedictine thought.

The Patron Saint of nuns and convulsive children, she is often invoked at times of inclement weather – legend having it that on the night that she died in 543 CE she prayed for a storm to prevent her brother returning to his monastery, and later in the night he observed her soul ascending to heaven in the form of a shining white dove.

St Scholastica is commemorated on 10th February each year.
