Apostolic Lent

by Frann Leach

Apostolic Lent or the Apostles' Fast is a period of fasting observed in the Eastern Orthodox Church. It is held from the day after All Saints to July 11 (in the Gregorian calendar), the day before the Feast of St Peter and St Paul. As All Saints is one week after the variable Great Feast of Pentecost/Trinity Sunday, the effect is that Apostolic Lent is of variable length.

Unlike Western churches, in the Orthodox tradition, there are actually three fasts called "Lent": Great Lent (which corresponds to Lent in the West, although because of calendar differences, the dates to not coincide exactly), Apostolic Lent and Dormition Lent.
