The two weeks prior to the Feast of the Dormition (running from the 14th to 28th August in the Gregorian calendar) is observed as a time of fasting by members of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
During this time, devotees abstain from meat, dairy and oil products.
The Orthodox Church observes three Lents in all: Great Lent, which corresponds to the Western Lent although it occurs on different dated because of calendar differences, Apostolic Lent or the Apostles' Fast, and Dormition Lent.
