National Women’s Day is an annual public holiday in South Africa celebrated on 9th August. It was instituted in 1994 to commemorate the march of 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in 1956 to protest against the Pass Laws (this was proposed legislation requiring African and "coloured persons" - the term used for people of mixed race - to carry special identification documents curtailing their freedom of movement).
