The Spring Bank Holiday in the UK was originally set as the Monday after Whitsunday and was almost universally known as Whitsuntide or Whit Monday which was, of course, a movable feast due to its relationship with Easter in the Christian calendar.
As a result the Whitsuntide holiday was redesignated Spring Bank Holiday and set as the last Monday in May, which is much less volatile in movement.
The day has, on the whole, lost any religious connection or significance and is simply a public holiday, widely respected and followed, although many businesses (especially shops and retail outlets) remain open.
