Abraham Lincoln was born on 12th February 1809. He was the 16th President of the United States and the first to be assassinated, on Good Friday, 14th April 1865, whilst attending the Theatre.
Unlike George Washington, who is recognised with a national holiday, Lincoln is only commemorated by state holidays, despite his significant contribution both to maintaining the Union during the Civil War and commencing the initiatives to abolish slavery.
To this day, Lincoln's famous address at Gettysburg, delivered on 19th November 1863 when dedicating a cemetery for those who had fallen in the Civil War, is central to American history.
There is continuing disquiet that Lincoln, in particular, is not honoured at a National level other than through the alternative name to Washington's Birthday, Presidents' Day.
