As the rest of Australia celebrates Boxing Day, the residents of South Australia have their own public holiday – Proclamation Day – which celebrates the proclamation of the State as a British Province on 28th December 1836. It is celebrated each year on the first working day after Christmas Day, which is usually 26th December.
In reality, modern inhabitants of South Australia treat the day as an extension of the Christmas holiday, just as other Australians celebrate Boxing Day.Western Australia also used to celebrate Proclamation Day, in their case on 21st October, but this was superseded by Labour Day celebrations, the date was changed (to 5th March) and Proclamation Day was dropped from the annual calendar.
