The Fast of the Apostles, also called the Fast of the Holy Apostles and the Apostles’ Fast, was the fast undertaken by the Apostles of Jesus Christ following Pentecost. The fast has been commemorated at least since the times of Pope Leo I (461 AD), and is unusual in that it has no fixed duration.
In preparation for their departure from Jerusalem to spread Christ’s message, the Apostles fasted and dedicated time to prayer and meditation to strengthen their resolve.
The Fast commences on the day after Pentecost (which is determined by the movable festival of Easter) and lasts until 29th June, the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul.
The Churches of Greece and of Constantinople (as well as some other local churches) changed to a different calendar in 1924 which means that Easter can fall very late in the liturgical calendar, and the Fast of the Apostles is not celebrated.
The fast is most commonly observed in Roman Catholic, Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches.
