The Feast of St Peter and St Paul should properly be called the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, as it is one of the higher ranking holy days in the Roman Catholic calendar, although not a day of obligation in most countries.
The feast commemorates the martyrdom in Rome of the Apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
For those in the Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, the feast also signifies the end of the Fast of The Apostles which commences on the Monday following All Saints Sunday in most traditions. (All Saints Day in the Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches follows an earlier tradition kept by the whole Church, celebrating the feast on the first Sunday after Pentecost). The feast of St Peter and St Paul is a day of recommended attendance, there being no days of obligation in the Eastern Catholic Church.
