Ali was born on the 13th day of Rajab in 599 BCE in Makkah, (commonly known in the West as Mecca), now in Saudi Arabia. When his mother, Fatima, felt the birth pangs, she was on pilgrimage, and retired to the Holy Kaaba for seclusion, so her son Ali had the unique honor of being born in the house of God.
Because of a dispute concerning the name that should be given to him between Fatima and Abu Talib, his father, they asked the Holy Prophet to decide. He decreed that, as the child had been born in the House of God, he should be named Ali, the first child to be named after Allah.
When the Prophet visited his parents after Ali's birth, the child had not yet opened his eyes, but when the Prophet took him into his lap, he opened them, so the first person he saw after his birth was the Holy Prophet.
Ali was first cousin to the Holy Prophet, and the first male to convert to Islam.
