Ascension Day is a Christian festival which falls on the the 40th day after Easter Day (the sixth Thursday after Easter Sunday). It commemorates the day when Jesus Christ ascended to heaven in the presence of his apostles, after his resurrection. It is one of the principal feasts in the Christian calendar, although it is not celebrated as a rule by casual believers. In some churches the Ascension Day service is moved to the following Sunday (the Sunday before Pentecost), particularly in the United States and places where there are no facilities to hold services during the week.
Ascension Day is believed to have been celebrated since the time of Jesus Christ's crucifixion. It is celebrated by all branches of the Christian church. In the Roman Catholic Church Ascension is a Holy Day of Obligation, and it is one of the 12 Great Feasts in the Eastern Orthodox Church. In Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Germany (where it is also Father's Day) Ascension Day is a public holiday.
In some churches and communities, the Sunday before Ascension is called Rogation Sunday and the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are also referred to as Rogation Days.
