Annunciation

The Feast of the Annunciation normally occurs on 25th March but this may be changed in the Roman Catholic church if it falls on a Sunday or during Holy Week. It corresponds to the English Quarter Day, Lady Day and commemorates the announcement to Mary by the Archangel Gabriel that she would bear a child who would be called the son of God.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church the day is seen as being of special importance and the liturgy known as the Divine Liturgy of St Chrysostom is celebrated, and a special hymn is sung. This takes place even if Easter Sunday itself falls on 25th March, which is known as Kyriopascha.
