Egypt celebrates Armed Forces Day every year on 6 October, in commemoration of the 1973 (Fourth) Arab-Israeli War (which is known by various other names, including Yom Kippur War - as this was the day on which a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria launched their surprise attack - and Ramadan War - 6 October 1973 was 10 Ramadan).

The war lasted for less than 3 weeks, ending on 26 October, and although territory was lost in the Golan Heights and only limited gains achieved in the Sinai front, Egypt and its Arab allies gained the confidence to negotiate as equals in future negotiations with Israel and led to the Camp David Accords by which Egypt became the first Arab state to recognize Israel.

Armed Forces Day is celebrqated with a military parade and air display.

UN Resolution 339 confirming the ceasefire between Eqypt and Israel (which had supposedly taken place on 22 October, though neither side seems to have paid much attention to it), which occurred on 24th October is commemorated as Suez Day. In fact, fighting did not finally cease until 2 days later.
