Berchtold's Day
Berchtold's Day celebrates Duke Berchtold V, who founded Bern (the federal capital of Switzerland) in the 12th century.
According to legend, the Duke went on a hunting trip declaring that he would name the settlement after the first animal he killed. As it turned out, his first kill was a bear, or Bár in German. The place was therefore named Bárn, the spelling of which was later changed to become Bern.
Many of the events and celebrations discussed on Which Day can best be enjoyed by visiting the country where they started. To find out more about visiting the destination of your dreams, visit Faraway Places
