Children's Day (Kodomo no hi)

Google

Although called Children’s Day (Kodomo no hi) it is the Boy's Festival (Tango no sekku) which is celebrated on this day. Families pray for the health and future success of their sons by hanging up carp streamers and displaying samurai dolls, both symbolizing strength, power and success in life.

This is the last of the four holidays which form part of what is called "Golden Week".

The Girl’s Festival is celebrated on March 3.

An unrelated holiday of the same name is celebrated in the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Laos on 1st June each year.

Many of the events and celebrations discussed on Which Day can best be enjoyed by visiting the country where they started. To find out more about visiting the destination of your dreams, visit Faraway Places Travel Guide.
