In most countries Father’s Day is a secular holiday which is contemporary to the 20th century and is a celebration of fatherhood. In some societies it is also the day to commemorate fathers and forefathers who have died.
Father’s Day is celebrated on a variety of dates around the world and typically involves giving cards and gifts to fathers and participation in family activities.
In the United States, the origins appear to lie in Fairmont, West Virginia where in 1908 a Father’s Day celebration was held in a local Methodist Church. The inspiration is not known, but Mother’s Day had only recently been celebrated in nearby Grafton, although the probable trigger was a mine explosion some months earlier in which some 361 men perished, many of them fathers. Other initiatives to establish the day in the US took place in various locations during the early 20th century.
In 1966, President Johnson made Father’s Day a holiday to be celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June in the US.
